Furniture for an installation based on the concept of “TROPE,” an original product line by graf, created by Tato Architects, dot architects, and graf at Blend Studio in Osaka, a space we designed.
We read TROPE as furniture that remains unfinished: object-like parts that cannot stand on their own, to be combined by users who actively discover how they might be used. Furniture ordinarily circulates with its function already fixed, leaving the user as a mere recipient. Handed over as parts, however, furniture blurs the boundary between using and making, returning the user to the position of discoverer.
Here, steel parts incapable of standing alone are bound into a chair, a bed, and a table with stretch film — a material that appears only while goods are in circulation, peeled off and discarded the moment use begins. By entrusting structure to this provisional material, the furniture lingers in the state just before unpacking, suspended between distribution and use. The bindings can be undone at any time, and the parts remain open to other combinations. We conceived of the furniture not as a fixed, finished form, but as a temporary equilibrium, bound and unbound.
