現代建築家コンセプト・シリーズの一冊として刊行された、2冊目の単著。「シンプルな多様性」「動的な抽象性」「他律的な自律性」「大きなディテール」「新築の廃墟」「家具の階段」——一見矛盾するような言葉の組み合わせを手がかりに、住宅の設計を通して考えてきたことを短いテキストの連なりとして編んでいる。
設計のコンセプトは机上で一息に組み立てられるものではなく、日々のなかで生まれた小さな気づきが、別の場所にある気づきと出会うことで、あるとき像を結ぶ。そうした過程をそのまま示すために、本書には論考だけでなく設計中の日記や、海外のクライアントから寄せられた言葉も織り込んだ。住宅という日常の舞台を設計する日常という往復——タイトルの「日常の設計の日常」は、その循環を指している。
Published as part of the Contemporary Architect’s Concept Series, this is Yo Shimada’s second single-authored book. Through a sequence of short texts, it traces ideas developed in the course of designing houses, taking as its cues pairs of words that seem at first contradictory: simple diversity, dynamic abstraction, heteronomous autonomy, large details, newly built ruins, staircases made of furniture.
A design concept is rarely assembled in a single sitting. Small observations made in the course of daily life encounter other observations found elsewhere, and only then does an idea take shape. To show this process as it happens, the book weaves diary entries written during design work and words received from clients overseas in among the essays. The title points to this circulation: the everyday work of designing houses, the everyday stages of life that houses become.
