This Machiya (old Japanese townhouse) was converted into an atmospheric and dimly lit café. To give the space new life while highlighting some of the remarkable antique details of the existing interior, many of its architectural elements were painted black. The old wooden ceiling beams were exposed and the cords connecting the light bulbs were left uncovered.
The glass in the mullion windows on the south side were replaced with stained glass panels featuring swirling, abstract patterns. In the interior half-translucent mirrors were installed to repeat the dim candlelight infinitely throughout the darkened space.
